The Celery Test
You walk into a bar and someone says to you “Do you know what you need for your business? You need Cadburys chocolate! If you’re not using Cadbury’s then your missing out on a mountain of money!”.
Five minutes later another person walks up to you and says “During this recession you have to be using Soya Milk for your business, if you’re not using Soya then you are crazy”. Somebody else then tells you it’s all about Jam Doughnuts, “Every business needs Jam Doughnuts, Facebook uses them and is making a million a day.”
Somebody comes over just before you leave and says “Celery, Celery is the Key”.
So four people have come up to you each giving advice, so who’s advice do you follow, all the advice is from perfectly good people who are all having a huge amount of success. So you go to the supermarket and you buy them all. You buy Cadbury’s Chocolate, Soya Milk, Jam Doughnuts and some Celery. You might or might not get value out of all of these products, there’s no guarantee. You spend a lot of time at the supermarket, you spend a lot of money, and worse, when you’re standing in the queue with all of your products in your arms, your celery, your soya milk, your Cadburys Chocolate, your Jam Doughnuts, nobody can see what you believe. Because what you bought didn’t necessarily correspond to anything you believe.
Nobody could see what you believe. So they just walk on by. Imagine if you knew why you had to buy these things, or you bought things because they corresponded to something you believed in. Imagine if the reason you do things was because you believed in healthy eating and that you only bought products that would help the integrity of your body.
The same smart people offer the same advice this time however when you go to the supermarket, you’re only going to buy celery and soya milk, the products that match your ethos. These are the only two products that make sense. Right? You’re sure to get value out of those products. Less time is spent at the supermarket, less money is spent, so there’s an efficiency play, and when you’re standing in queue holding your celery and holding your soya milk, everyone can see what you believe.

Size matters in contemporary art. From vast outdoor public sculptures such as the Angel of the North and Mark Wallinger’s soon to be realised White Horse to the many projects designed to enliven Tate Modern’s vast, bare Turbine Hall, the scale of art just keeps getting bigger.
‘Leviathan’, was inspired by the 17th century philosopher Thomas Hobbes’s idea of the state as an unwieldy, inchoate monster, he has advised against over-literal interpretations. First and foremost the piece is a play of structure and scale that alludes to the idea of the cathedral: the body as living, breathing sacred space, inside a structure that is literally cathedral-like. If the scale is overwhelming and megalomanic, there’s a humour to the piece that feels very human.

The genius of Cecil Balmond is behind some of the world's most exciting architectural endeavors. this is found in the principle of closest packing, a principle which even in its most elementary form is common in both the animate and inanimate worlds."Pearce's work follows in the tradition established by D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson and Konrad Wachsmann, and reflects his earlier close working association with Charles Eames and Buckminster Fuller. With Eames, he contributed to the design of seating and other furniture systems, and he edited the preliminary text of Fuller's Synergetics, that grand summary of his thoughts, and prepared the illustrations for the published version of that book.Many of the ideas explored in this book have already undergone "reduction to practice" in the firm Pearce founded, Synestructics, Inc. Its initial products have been kits and kites, and a ministructure large enough for kids to crawl through, the "Curved Space Labyrinth," a saddle polyhedra system made of transparent plastic. Adult-sized structures, and indeed megastructures, based on these principles can be realized as soon as entrepreneurs emerge whose vision is commensurate with that of Peter Pearce.

Türkiye'de faaliyet gösteren mimarların plan, eskiz, fotoğraf, maket gibi çeşitli mimarlık görselleştirme çalışmalarını bir araya getiren konsept sergi, Mimarlar Odası İzmir Şubesi işbirliğiyle İzmir'de sergileniyor.

Türkiye'de çalışan birçok önemli mimarın eserleri arasında çeşitli maketler, çizimler, fotoğraflar, baskılar ve eskizler ilk kez bir sergide bir araya getiriliyor. Mimari Teorisyen ve küratör Gökhan Karakuş tarafından, yeni mimarlık sergi konseptiyle organize edilen, önemli fakat fazla bilinmeyen çeşitli mimarlık görselleştirme çalışmaları, İzmir Mimarlar Odası işbirliğiyle İzmirlilerle buluşuyor. Kaya Arıkoğlu tarafından tasarlanan İzmir Limanı Yarışma projesinin el çizimi, Ishtiaq Rafiuddin ve Henrik Schulte tarafından Taksim meydanının altına yapılması planlanan bina hakkındaki ütopik teklif, Cem Kozar ve Işıl Ünal'ın İstanbul'un artık var olmayan tarihi yapılarını içeren Hayal-et Yapılar projesinin dijital görselleri, gibi mimarların Türkiye için geliştirdiği çeşitli projeler sergilenen eserler arasında yer alıyor.Öncelikle mimarlığı toplumun geneline göstermeyi ve mimarlığın nasıl bir sanat olduğunu anlatmayı amaçlayan sergi, 3-9 Ekim, 2011 tarihleri arasında, İzmir Fransız Kültür Merkezi'nde gerçekleştiriliyor.

İstanbul Serbest Mimarlar Derneği tarafından Seranit Ana Sponsorluğu'nda gerçekleşen Mimarlığın Kökenleri toplantı dizisinin ikincisinin konusu Çatalhöyük. M.Ö. 7400-6000 yıllarında yaşamını sürdürmüş dünyanın ilk kenti Çatalhöyük hakkında kazı başkanı arkeolog Ian Hodder etkileyici bir sunum yapacak.

On binlerce yıl yalnızca bir tüketici olarak yaşayan, yani yabani meyveleri devşiren, bitki köklerini çıkarıp yiyen, vahşi hayvanları avlayan insan, yaklaşık 10 bin yıl önce ilk kez yerleşik yaşama geçti. O aşamaya gelinceye kadar üretim faaliyeti yalnızca av aletleri yapmak ve avladığı hayvanların postundan giyecek yapmakla sınırlıydı. Yabani bitkileri ehlileştirip ekmeye başladığı ve yabani hayvanları evcilleştirip emri altına aldığı için mi yerleşik yaşama geçtiği, yoksa yerleşik yaşama geçtiği için mi bütün bunları yaptığı henüz tam olarak açıklanamıyor. Bilinen tek şey, bu ikisinin yani ehlileştirme ve evcilleştirme olayı ile yerleşik yaşama geçişin birbiriyle bağıntılı olduğu. Böylece insan ilk kez yalnızca tüketici olmaktan çıkarak, tüketiciliğinin yanı sıra üreticiliğe de adım atmış oldu. Bir başka deyişle, daha önceden yalnızca tabiatın sunduklarını tüketirken, bu değişimle birlikte tabiatın üretimine de katkıda bulunmaya başladı. Bu büyük değişime 'neolitik devrim' adı veriliyor.
1958 yılında İngiliz arkeolog James Mellaart tarafından keşfedilmiş olan Çatalhöyük'ün önemi de buradan geliyor. Dünyada neolitik devrim denilen yerleşik yaşama geçişin başladığı ilk yerlerden birisi olan Çatalhöyük, Konya'nın 60 kilometre kadar güneydoğusunda, Çumra ilçesinde yer alıyor. Geçmişi 9 bin yıl öncesine dayanıyor. Kent, eski evlerin terk edilip doldurulması ve üzerlerine yeni evler inşa edilmesiyle birçok kez yeniden kurulmak suretiyle M.Ö. 7400-6000 yıllarında yaşamını sürdürmüş. Bu süre içinde kentte yeniden inşa sonucu tam 18 iskân tabakası oluşmuş. Çatalhöyük'ün benzerleri olmakla birlikte, bu büyüklükte bir yerleşim yeri daha bulunmuş değil. Şimdiye kadar kazılarda bulunan en eski kumaş, en eski ayna, en eski tahta kâse Çatalhöyük'te bulunduğu için burasının en eski yerleşim yerlerinden birisi olduğu tartışmasız olarak ortaya çıkıyor. Çatalhöyük adı, farklı yükseklikte ve çatalı andıran iki tepeden oluşan bir höyük görünümünde olmasından kaynaklanıyor.

Çatalhöyük kazısını İngiliz arkeolog Ian Hodder başkanlığında uluslararası bir heyet yürütüyor. Dünyada öylesine büyük ilgi topluyor ki kazıya katılanların sayısı her geçen yıl daha da artıyor. Geçen yıl 13 ülkeden 120 kişi katılmıştı kazıya. Yeni bulgularla zenginleşen kazı faaliyeti dünyada gerçek bir ilgi odağı haline gelmiş durumda. Meraklıları her yıl yeni bulguların neler getireceğini bekliyor.

Your Rainbow Panorama | Olafur Eliasson , Aarhus, Denmark

Olafur Eliasson’s, “Your rainbow panorama,” is a circular, panoramic walkway, in all the colors of the rainbow, constructed on the roof of the cubic museum building designed by schmidt hammer lassen.

The ARoS building was inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy,” the nine circles of Hell and the journey up from the mountain of Purgatory, ending in perfection in Paradise. The permanent installation of “Your rainbow panorama” on the roof represents the completion of the building’s idea.

The 150 meter long, circular panoramic walkway, measuring 52 meters in diameter, is supported by 12 columns resting on the weight-bearing steel construction beneath the terrace deck.

The glass in “Your rainbow panorama” consists of 2 x 12 mm laminated glass composed of up to 6 colored sheets creating the individual shades. For the sake of personal safety, the two layers of glass have been heat-reinforced and laminated together around the colored sheets.

Beneath the “floating” work of art the 1,500 square meter roof surface is covered with sturdy timber, making the roof a unique recreational area and viewing platform some fifty meters about street level.During the hours of darkness, "Your rainbow panorama" is illuminated by means of lamps in the floor.
There is space for 290 visitors at one time on the roof terrace, and 150 in “Your rainbow panorama.”
“Your rainbow panorama” establishes a dialogue with the existing architecture and reinforces what was already there, that is to say the view across the city. I have created a space that can almost be said to erase the boundary between inside and outside – a place where you become a little uncertain as to whether you have stepped into a work of art or into part of the museum. This uncertainty is important to me, as it encourages people to think and sense beyond the limits within which they are accustomed to function.”

Modular Constructivism | Screens to Infinity by Erwin Hauer

Modular constructivism is a style of sculpture that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s and was associated especially with Erwin Hauer and Norman Carlberg. It is based on carefully structured modules which allow for intricate and in some cases infinite patterns of repetition, sometimes used to create limitless, basically planar, screen-like formations, and sometimes employed to make more multidimensional structures. Designing these structures involves intensive study of the combinatorial possibilities of sometimes quite curvilinear and fluidly shaped modules, creating a seamless, quasi-organic unity that can be either rounded and self-enclosed, or open and potentially infinite. The latter designs have proved useful and attractive for use in eye-catching architectural walls and screens, often featuring complex patterns of undulating, tissue-like webbing, with apertures which transmit and filter light, while generating delicate patterns of shadow.

Writing in Architecture Week (August 4, 2004), Hauer explains that "Continuity and potential infinity have been at the very center of my sculpture from early on."Hauer made an extensive study of biomorphic form, especially what he calls "saddle surfaces," which combine convex and concave curvature and thus allow for smooth self-combination, sometimes in multiple dimensions. Another inspiration is the sculpture of Henry Moore, with its fluid curves and porosity.

Hauer's enthusiasm caught the imagination of his colleague at Yale, Norman Carlberg. Both were devoted students of the arch-formalist Josef Albers. Indeed, from the beginning, there was in this modular approach to sculpture an implicit formalism and even minimalism which held itself aloof from some of the other artistic trends of the time, such as the pop art and post-modernism that were just beginning to emerge. As Carlberg recalls, within his artistic circle "you analysed, you looked at something, but you looked at it formally just for what it was and the message was almost always out of it."

Screens to Infinity by Erwin Hauer

In the 1950s, Austrian-born sculptor Erwin Hauer designed and built architectural screens and walls whose complex and intriguing geometry attracted much admiration at the time. But they have been largely forgotten, and some have even been destroyed. Here are his thoughts on one example of this extraordinary work.

Continuity and potential infinity have been at the very center of my sculpture from early on. I derived the notion of a continuous surface primarily from my studies of biomorphic form. This was greatly reinforced by my first encounter with the works of Henry Moore, who combined the dominant continuity of surface with an unprecedented cultivation of interior spaces within his sculpture.

The combination of these two factors inevitably led to the emergence of saddle surfaces, so named because they resemble a horse saddle, fusing convex and concave curvature. This kind of surface, while present in organic nature and in sculpture derived from it, has never received much attention in art, except in medieval armor and, beginning in the 1940s, in the works of Moore, Naum Gabo, and Antoine Pevsner.

More recently, sculptors with topological interests have been enjoying the marvelous opportunities that the saddle (or, as they call it, the anticlastic) surface offers. In architecture, saddle-type roofs also emerged. They were pioneered by Felix Candela with his thin-shell concrete structures and by Frei Otto with his hghi-tech tent structures.

"Design 1" (1950)

In 1950 Moore's saddle surfaces influenced my sculpture "Design 1." This sculpture evolved into a repeat pattern because of the fact that the saddle surface refuses to permit the closure of form. It contains the seed of infinite expansion and, when used as a module, continues to expand while it goes through repeating convoluted configurations.

Moore had tamed his saddle surfaces by keeping them embedded within a dominant convex topography of his biomorphic sculptures. I permitted their drive toward infinity to take its course, simply to find out what would happen.

The three-dimensional modules I created had boundaries lacking closure and found completion only when joined by replicas of themselves. Thus, multitudes of modules were aligned, much like tiles, adding up to create surfaces that were continuous throughout the entire structure.

Design 1 emphasizes the interaction between the screen and the light. Its appearance varies dramatically in relation to the source of light and the position of the viewer. The myriad apertures of the screen subtly change shape as we perceive them from different angles.

Depending on the light and our distance from the screen, we may notice that these apertures tend to configure as patterns of large, overlapping circles, or outline massive solid forms weaving in and out of the plane.

Discovering Light

Light hitting the screen from the front accentuates the continuous, meandering linear patterns that traverse it apparently infinitely, much like the continuo in baroque music. Between these lines, in diffuse light, the surface is shaded with subtle gradients everywhere. Strong light, however, will create striking shadow patterns on the surface of the screen and beyond. If the light source is the sun, these patterns will change with the hour and the season.

For all of its richness, however, this front-lit sculptural landscape pales in comparison with the back-lit screen. When the light comes from behind, it articulates the individual spaces contained within the wall.

Suffused with luminescence, these normally unnoticed interior voids come to our attention for the first time, revealing wonderful, unfamiliar characteristics. All of the internal and most of the external shapes are bounded by saddle surfaces.

While we are familiar with the diffusion of light by a convex surface, and with the concentration and focusing of light by a concave surface, we generally have not experienced what happens when light hits a surface that combines both curvatures simultaneously, such as the saddle.

Light that pours into the wall from the opposite side seems to adhere to the surface, to wrap around the sculpted forms, and to illuminate even those parts of the surface that face away from the source of light. The complex screen transforms the light so completely that the wall appears to radiate far more light than would pass through a flat plane with comparable holes punched through.

The module for Design 1 originated with the formal concept of two opposing bridges that partially contain an interior space. Those bridges are fitted diagonally into a square tile and are connected along the edges to form a single entity.

The shape of the outline of the openings within each tile may bring to mind the clover leaf of a highway overpass or, in its most spacious expansion, the line formed by the stitches of a baseball. A number of these tiles are joined edge to edge and oriented the same way so that the surfaces of contiguous modules flow seamlessly into each other.

Only when a certain number of modules have been assembled does a new configuration emerge, that of a great circle. These sets of aligned and overlapping circles have been a rather universal pattern in various cultures worldwide. However, in Design 1 it was not a planned feature but surprised me by emerging during the assembly of the first dozen tiles. Subsequently and by choice, it became the basis for some of my later designs.

The screen walls developed between 1950 and 1959 were undertaken as purely sculptural studies based on a modular structure; however, their potential for architectural application was soon evident. Beginning in 1954, I added certain features to the designs to facilitate their architectural use.

Workshop Products Participants will produce 1st phase: A series of 3d renderings and 2D drawings representing 3-Dimentionality 2nd phase: (selective) Depending on their research either -Animation of the fragment generation (3000 frames) -or a topographical incremental variation of 1 physical prototype using a combination of Laser Cut,3D printing or 3d milling. The Workshop consists of 2.5 Workshop Weeks (14th - 29th of July) where the participant will follow a series of day-long tutorials, lectures and deskcrits.

İstanbul yaz sergisi 8 Haziran'da başladı ve 15 Temmuza kadar Sanat Limanı Antrepo 5 binasında izleyicileriyle buluşacak. Project International | Pin ve tabii ki Studio 5 olarak biz de deneysel işlerimizle sergideydik. Doğruyu söylemek gerekirse Gökhan Karakuş çok başarılı bir iş çıkarmış, serginin mimari ve deneysel mimari çalışmaları içeren bölümü çok zengin bir içeriğe sahip, tanıdığımız bildiğimiz mimari proje örneklerinin olduğu sergide aynı zamanda, aslında merak ettiğimiz genç mimarların ve çeşitli insiyatiflerin kendi mimarlık dillerini sergileme şansı bulması dolayısıyla bu zengin içeriğin sergiyi, mimarlık ve sanatın kesişim noktasına biraz daha yaklaştırmış olması ayrıca önemli ve değerli.

Türkiye'de bu anlamda düzenlenen ilk mimarlık sergisi özelliğini de taşıyan etkinlik önümüzdeki yıllarda devamı yapılacak sergiler için şimdiden pek çok kişiyi heyecanlandırmış durumda.

Yapı Endüstri Merkezi'nde devam etmekte olan YTÜ 1:1 Materyal_Deneyim isimli 1. sınıf mimarlık öğrencilerinin Mimari Projeye Giriş (MTG) dersi kapsamında gerçekleştirdikleri 1:1 ölçekli dönem sonu projelerinin 2. Gününde Stüdyo 5 olarak James ve Dev Şeftali hikayesinden yola çıkarak hazırlanan projelerin kurulumları tamamlanmıştır.

Her ne kadar uzun ve zahmetli bir süreç yaşamış olsalar da tıpkı hikayedeki gibi canlı bir atmosferde ve bolca eğlenerek mimarlık hayatlarındaki ilk serüvenlerini mutlu sonla tamamladılar.

Bütün dönemin değerlendirmesinin yapılacağı tartışma ve sunumlar, 24 Ocak Pazartesi günü saat 14:00'da başlayacak olan kolokyumda izlenebilir.

2010 yılı Ocak ayında ilkigerçekleştirilen “YTÜ İlk Yıl Mimarlık Eğitiminde 1:1 Prototipler Sergisi” bu yıl da 12 grup ve yaklaşık 170 öğrenci ile birlikte Yapı-Endüstri Merkezi (YEM) ev sahipliğinde hayata geçirilecek.

Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi (YTÜ) Mimarlık Bölümü Mimari Tasarıma Giriş (MTG) Stüdyoları kapsamında tasarımı ve 1:1 ölçekli uygulaması gerçekleştirilen 12 adet prototip “1:1 Materyal Deneyim” üst temasıyla Yapı Endüstri Merkezi'nde (YEM) sergilenecek. Sergiye, açılışını YTÜ Mimarlık Fakültesi Dekanı Murat Soygeniş'in yapacağı bir de kolokyum eşlik edecek.

Eğitimin, “sadece kurum içinde yürütülen bir etkinlik olmadığı” vurgusu ile gerçekleştirilecek olan “1:1 Materyal Deneyim” sergi ve kolokyumu –YTÜ Mimarlık Bölümü Bilgisayar Ortamında Tasarım Bilim Dalı’nın açıklaması ile- “eğitiminin artık, dış dünyayla ilk günden itibaren etkileşim içinde olan ve yaşam boyu süren bir süreç olması nedeniyle bu süreci oluşturan ortamların ve ürünlerinin okul içinde ‘sınırlı’ kalması yerine tartışma-geri bildirim için kamuya, diğer eğitim ortamlarına ve kişilere açılması” anlamında önemseniyor.

“Görme, görsel kayıt, gördüğünü soyutlama, soyutladığını yeniden kurma, örüntü, doku, geometri, tasarım araştırmaları ve prototipler” konularını farklı yöntem ve egzersizlerle ele alan ve dönem boyu değinilen konuları malzeme-gereç-teknik araştırmalar çerçevesinde değerlendiren 170 öğrenci ile 12 yürütücüden oluşan yaklaşık 15 kişilik grupların, MTG sürecinin son altı haftasında uyguladıkları ve kendilerine YEM’de ayrılacak 12 metrekarelik alanları tanımlayacak şekilde tasarladıkları 1:1 ölçekli prototip üretimleri, sergide görücüye çıkacak.

Koordinasyonu, YTÜ Mimarlık Bölümü Bilgisayar Ortamında Tasarım Bilim Dalı tarafından yürütülen ve bu yarıyıl Doç. Dr. Şebnem Yalınay Çinici ile Arş. Gör. Dr. Fulya Özsel Akipek’in organize ettiği sergi ve kolokyumda yer alan stüdyolar şöyle:

This project proposes an investigation on how habitation and the pedestrian movement are interfering withthe urban fabric that starts from particular points and spreads out following its own growth rules. At thesame time the growth is influenced by the city, and it ends up infecting the city itself. The aim is to create anetwork of small-scale spaces that would reactivate the link of the citizens to the public space.

The participants will suggest design interventions focusing on the transitional parts of the urban fabric,observing the reaction caused by the placement of their proposed “prototypes” in different positions /situations of the area under investigation. Is there any significant change in the fabric around the installations caused by their existence?

The area chosen is the Golden Horn or Haliç in Turkish, a horn-shaped fiord on the European side of Istanbul and is fed by two small streams. Various developments have been undertaken in this area in the direction of improving and renewing it, such as the conversion of existing historical buildings to museums (eg. Rahmi Koc Museum), libraries, educational institutions, zones for people to interact and socialize such as parks. The potential danger of this transformation is the urban gentrification, which happens during the physical renovation of central and historical areas resulting in the displacement of the existing social class and the occupation of the area by another, usually higher, urban class. Therefore, this project aims to create patterns that would deal with urban gentrification in an efficient way, achieving to maintain anduse the existing structure at the same time as improving it by merging the new and old residences of the area. Parametric Associative Design is an appropriate tool to translate social, spatial, location and time contexts into form and structure. This will give the opportunity to deal with the complexity of notions forming today’s urban cityscape in a more precise and efficient way. In terms of methodology, a first step could be a research on performances and their associations existing in the area, in order to develop the vocabulary of qualities which will then evolve into spatial parameters. This way the design groups will maintain infinite design flexibility and at the same time provide realistic solutions answering to site specific problems. Some examples of such qualities and associations could be Open-air/Sheltered, Big/Small, Horizontal/Vertical, Permeable/Solid, Enclosed/Communicative etc. responding respectively to the shape, size, position, texture or performative aspects of the space. In terms of software the main focus of the workshop will be to operate with McNeel’s Grasshopper plug-in

for Rhinoceros 4. Described as a “generative modeling for Rhino”, Grasshopper is a design environment suited for the explorations throughout the workshop. During the first days of the workshop, there will be an intensive learning course of Grasshopper. The resulting designed product will be fabricated and exposed on site.

Richard Hardy, a recent graduate from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, produced this eye-popping video—exploring an all-encompassing machine-forest populated with mechanical flowers and fluttering urban biotechnologies, with architectural sponges perched high atop masts—for Nic Clear's Unit 15.

Called The Transcendent City, the film documents what Hardy describes as "an autonomous artificial machine that extends across the earth adapting to the natural eco-systems it encounters while deriving its energy from the renewable resources available at each particular site. The systems desire is to maintain homeostasis within itself whilst maintaining homeostasis within the greater system, Gaia. Its processes are engineered on the molecular scale by nano technologies controlled by molecular computers that monitor and analyse the environment."

1. Allow events to change you / Olayların Seni Değiştirmesine İzin Ver.
You have to be willing to grow. Growth is different from something that happens to you. You produce it. You live it. The prerequisites for growth: the openness to experience events and the willingness to be changed by them.

Gelişmeyi istemek gerekir. Gelişim sana bir şeylerin olmasından farklıdır. Sen onu üretirsin. Yaşarsın. Gelişimin ön koşulu, tecrübelere açık olmak ve onlar tarafından değiştirilmeyi istemektir.

Real innovation in design, or any other field, happens in context. That context is usually some form of cooperatively managed enterprise. Frank Gehry, for instance, is only able to realize Bilbao because his studio can deliver it on budget. The myth of a split between "creatives" and "suits" is what Leonard Cohen calls a 'charming artifact of the past.'

The bandwidth of the world is greater than that of your TV set, or the Internet, or even a totally immersive, interactive, dynamically rendered, object-oriented, real-time, computer graphic–simulated environment.

Real growth often happens outside of where we intend it to, in the interstitial spaces – what Dr. Seuss calls "the waiting place." Hans Ulrich Obrist once organized a science and art conference with all of the infrastructure of a conference – the parties, chats, lunches, airport arrivals – but with no actual conference. Apparently it was hugely successful and spawned many ongoing collaborations.

Asıl gelişim çoğu zaman hiç beklemediğiniz yerlerde olur. Dr Seuss'un deyişiyle "bekleme yerlerinde". Hans Ulrich Obrist bir bilim ve sanat konferansı düzenlemişti. Disciplinary boundaries and regulatory regimes are attempts to control the wilding of creative life. They are often understandable efforts to order what are manifold, complex, evolutionary processes. Our job is to jump the fences and cross the fields.

41. Laugh / Gül
People visiting the studio often comment on how much we laugh. Since I've become aware of this, I use it as a barometer of how comfortably we are expressing ourselves.

Stüdyoya gelen insanlar sık sık ne kadar çok güldüğümüze dikkat çekerler. Bunun farkına vardığımdan beri gülmeyi bir barometre olarak kullanıyorum. Kendimizi ne kadar rahat ifade ettiğimizi ölçmek için.

42. Remember / Hatırla
Growth is only possible as a product of history. Without memory, innovation is merely novelty. History gives growth a direction. But a memory is never perfect. Every memory is a degraded or composite image of a previous moment or event. That’s what makes us aware of its quality as a past and not a present. It means that every memory is new, a partial construct different from its source, and, as such, a potential for growth itself.

Bir mağaranın Alegorisi, Platon ve Glaukon arasındaki diyalog

Şimdi, bilgimizi ve bilgisizliğimizi, şu anlatacaklarımla ölç, Glaukon.

Yer altında bir mağara tasarla. Mağaranın kapısı bol ışıklı bir yola açılıyor, ama mağarada oturan insanların kolları boyunları ve bacakları zincirlerle bağlanmış, sırtları da ışığa çevrilmiş; öyle ki sadece karşılarındaki mağara duvarını görüyorlar, başlarını arkaya çeviremiyorlar, kendilerini bildikleri andan beri de burada böylece oturmaktalar.

Düşün ki sırtlarının arkasındaki ışıklı yoldan bir sürü nesne geçiyor, ışık bu nesneleri mağaranın duvarına yansıtıyor. Şimdi bu adamlar sadece mağaranın duvarına yansıyan hayalleri görebilirler, o hayalleri meydana getiren gerçek nesneleri göremezler, değil mi?

Demek ki bu adamlar birbirleriyle konuşabilselerdi duvarda gördükleri hayallere bir takım adlar vereceklerdi, çünkü bu hayalleri gerçek sanmaktadırlar. Bu adamların gözünde gerçeklik, asıl gerçeklerin duvarda yansıyan hayallerinden ya da gölgelerinden başka bir şey değildir.

Şimdi bu adamlardan birinin zincirlerini çözüp ayağa kalkmasına ve başını asıl gerçekliklere çevirmesine izin verelim. Gözleri bol ışıktan kamaşır ve asıl gerçeklikleri göremezdi, değil mi? Dahası, kamaşan gözlerini yeniden duvara çevirirdi ve duvardaki hayallere rahatlıkla bakardı. Ama gözlerini yavaş yavaş alıştırarak asıl ışığın kaynağına da pekala bakabilirdi. İşte o zaman arkadaşlarıyla gördüğü şeylerin birer hayalden ibaret olduğunu, asıl gerçeklerin şimdi gördükleri olduğunu anlayacaktı.

İşte, sevgili Glaukon, gözümüzle gördüğümüz bu dünya o mağaranın duvarıdır, arkasındaki ışığa bakabilen insan da duyu gözünü akıl gözüne çeviren bilgedir.

3 Aralık 1975 Brüksel doğumlu Julien De Smedt Fransız sanat düşkünü Jacques Leobold ve Belçikalı sanatçı Jacques Léobold ve Belçikalı sanatçı Claude De Smedt’in çocuğudur. Brüksel’de St Luc, La Cambre, Sint Lukas, Paris’te Belleville ve Los Angeles’te Sci-Arc’ta öğrenim gördükten sonra, 2000 yılında Londra Barlett Mimarlık Okulu’ndan mezun oldu. 1997- 1998 ve 2000- 2001 yılları arasında OMA, Rotterdam’da çalıştı. 2001’de PLOT ofisinin kurucularından biri oldu. Çalışmaları Kopenhag, Toronto, Paris, New York ve Sao Paulo gibi pek çok yerde sergilenmiş olan Julien De Smedt Kopenhag’da ve Brüksel’de yaşamaktadır. JDS’nin “PIXL TO XL” adlı ilk monografisi Aralık 2007’de Damdi Yayıncılık tarafından yayınlanmıştır.
